Medical Assisting

In recent years the medical assisting profession has become indispensable to the health care industry. Not only have physicians become more reliant on medical assistants, but their services are also being requested by hospitals, clinics, nursing homes, and diagnostic laboratories, as well as medical supply businesses, home health agencies, insurance companies, and pharmaceutical companies. Medical assistants have become an important part of the health care team and their responsibilities continue to expand as the need for their services grows.

Programs Upon Completion of the Associates Degree, the Graduate is Eligible to Sit for the Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) Examination Given by the American Association of Medical Assistants.

Overview

The Medical Assisting Associate Degree Program consist of 63 credit hours. Day students will complete their training in four (4) semesters and night students in six (6). All students must be enrolled for a minimum of 12 credit hours of study to be considered full time students. Students are expected to pursue the complete curriculum in the sequence offered in order to graduate on schedule. Completion of all semesters with an overall 2.0 GPA is required and entitles the student to the Associate of Applied Science Degree in Medical Assisting.

Objectives

Due to the aging population and ever-changing healthcare technology, careers in healthcare are among the most stable. With the Medical Assisting Program, you'll receive an introduction to the medical assisting profession, medical terminology, and the systems and functions of the human body. Study medical concepts in theory, then apply what you've learned with real medical equipment in our fully equipped lab. You'll also acquire necessary office skills and study the business side of the medical practice along with its legal and ethical responsibilities. During the final semester of the program, you'll serve an Externship to receive invaluable practical experience in a cooperating physician's office, clinic, or other healthcare facility.

Upon completion of the associate degree, the graduate is eligible to sit for the Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) examination given by the American Association of Medical Assistants. This examination is given twice each year, and the RETS College campus is one of the many testing sites.

Students also have the opportunity to sit for the Phlebotomy certification exam that is given on-site at RETS College. The International Academy of Phlebotomy Sciences offers a certification exam for students who have successfully completed the five-week phlebotomy course offered as part of Clinical Procedures III.
