Concerns about energy efficiency, the integration of sophisticated control systems, new technologies in heating and cooling, and construction spurred by growth have created tremendous career opportunities for trained Heating, Ventilating, AC and Refrigeration technicians.
As a technician in the Heating, Ventilating, AC and Refrigeration field, you will work to maintain a healthy, comfortable environment in all types of buildings from residential to commercial. You will apply theory and principles learned in the class and lab settings that will help you to develop, select, operate and test heating, ventilating and air conditioning equipment. There is an afternoon program in addition to the day and evening sessions.
RETS College is a nationally recognized Partnership for Air-Conditioning, Heating, Refrigeration Accreditation (PAHRA) accredited facility.
The Heating, Ventilating, AC and Refrigeration program consists of three 12-week quarters, 36 weeks of training, for a total of 36 quarter credit hours. After successful completion of all three quarters with an accumulated grade point average of 2.0 (C) or better and pass the ICE (Industry Competency Exam), the student is entitled to a Diploma in Heating, Ventilation, Air conditioning and Refrigeration, (Heating, Ventilating, AC and Refrigeration). Students must be enrolled for a minimum of 12 credit hours of study to be considered full-time for administrative and financial aid purposes, and are expected to pursue the complete curriculum in the sequence offered.
The Heating, Ventilating, AC and Refrigeration program is designed for persons with or without previous training or experience in any of the climate control disciplines. The objective of the program is to provide the student with all entry-level skills with which he or she can obtain employment in the climate control industry.
The program includes a phase in computerized diagnostics covering commercial refrigeration, gas heat, heat pumps, and air conditioning. Students are provided the opportunity to take the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Refrigerant Transition and Recovery Certification test. While EPA certification is not a requirement, virtually all contractors require it.
According to American Refrigeration Institute standards, we require our students take the industry Competency Exam (ICE). This credential is recognized throughout the climate control industry as a symbol of outstanding skill.
Concerns about depletion of fossil fuel supplies, the cost of electricity, indoor air quality, and the possibility of global warming all indicate the growing need for more qualified technicians in this field.
The graduate will be qualified for employment as an equipment installer, service technician, apartment maintenance technician, sales representative, refrigeration mechanic, commercial maintenance, field service representative, air conditioning mechanic, refrigerant plant operator, load evaluation engineer, wholesale equipment and parts salesman, food service (vending) technician, company service manager, residential air conditioning and heating technician, and other related positions.
